Plot

This book use 1960 as the year story background and tells a story about a six-year-old girl, Ruby, and her family that just moved to New Orleans from Mississippi, looking to improve their life. During Ruby's time attending William Frantz Elementary, an all-white school, that is ordered by a judge, parents refuse their children to go to school with her, and she has to face angry mobs full of that people. [2]

Controversy

Large mobs of people who don't agree with Ruby going to Frantz Elementary, gathered on Ruby’s first day. The mobs yelled at her, protesting with signs, and some tried to hurt her. She was guided by federal marshals through the mobs and into the school. The mobs happened for a month. However, Ruby never got stop going to school. Despite the fact that she was the only student in the room, because all the white families didn't want to send their kid to the same school as black students, Ruby’s determination to learn never faltered. She walked into Franz Elementary and into the empty classrooms every day. [3] The pictures in the book portray the racial segregation and loneliness that Ruby felt through the story. Ruby is is appeared in the story being sharp looking with a bow in her hair and typically a smiling face. The pictures show with the text for readers to see the anger in the protesters as well as seeing that it is so unjustifiable for a little innocent girl as she walks past these crowds each day. [4]
