Plot

Starr Carter in The Hate U Give[2]

Starr Carter is regularly turning between two worlds: the poor, mostly black, neighborhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white, prep school she attends. The shaky tension between these worlds is smashed when Starr witnesses the fatal gunfire of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer[3].

Controversy

In the movie, Starr’s called the police who shot Khalil as One Fifteen. Khalil died due to law enforcement criminalized young black Americans, not because of One-Fifteen. As One-Fifteen’s partners protect him, comforting him in the consequence of the shooting and trying to twist Starr’s testimony during her first interview, it becomes clear that One-Fifteen’s behavior is considered appropriate. The movie shows that the system is already shattered as stated by Starr "the problem lies in society’s inability to listen to black people"[4].
