Summary

The poet is concerned about Black Maria coming to get him. The upstairs music, if it's for him. He asks an unidentified female (called Babe only) if she's ever seen the fun-filled sun rise. The Black Maria is going by and a new day has started.

Racism Issue

The most important point in the poem of Langston Hughes is the race because from racial issues the Harlem Renaissance community he led was initiated. The background of the Harlem Renaissance was the great migration of African Americans from country to city. A lot of intellectuals like Alain Locke led the Harlem Revival after World War 1, and Americans were interested in the history of African America. Langston Hughes is also one of those intellectuals and he believed that as they undergo the racial prejudice and inequality of modern American society, there will be a promising future for African Americans. In his poem 'Black Maria', this conviction was illustrated.
