Capital punishment in Yemen

  • Reviewed: Disarmament of Libya
  • Comment: The article was originally created on January 31 by CSBamb14. Starting on 1 February, I went ahead and expanded it fourfold to include annual death rates, several references, and a detailed summary. Obviously my work with the article is not yet done, but I think it's decent enough at this point to qualify for a DYK nomination.

Symbol question.svg Nice job, Kurtis, but I think that this article needs to be expanded fivefold to be eligible for a DYK? nomination, rather than expanded fourfold. If you'll expand this article a little more it should become eligible for a DYK? nomination. Futurist110 (talk) 23:45, 9 February 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, just to make sure, I'll do that shortly. Kurtis (talk) 00:10, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
Please let me know when you are done so that I can approve this DYK? nomination of yours. Futurist110 (talk) 01:09, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
Symbol confirmed.svg OK, it should be good enough right now. Futurist110 (talk) 08:01, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
  • Symbol possible vote.svg I have pulled this one from the queue as I have some concerns about the accuracy and neutrality of the hook as well as one or two concerns about the article. Firstly, stating that Yemen "regularly" executes juveniles sounds POV to me, firstly because it seems to be based on an estimate that 14 juveniles were executed between 2006 and 2010, secondly because it appears that none have been executed in the last two years, thirdly because nobody is exactly sure how many because few birth certificates are issued in Yemen and ages of offenders have to be estimated by the courts, and fourthly because it is actually against the law in Yemen to execute juveniles. The hook needs to reflect these circumstances and I think the article could also do a better job of explaining them. I might make a couple of tweaks to the article and propose an alt myself in the next day or two. Gatoclass (talk) 14:05, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
  • It has happened since 2010, in the past few months in fact (a few of the references in the article mention that).[1] I'm not sure where you got the "estimate that 14 juveniles were executed between 2006 and 2010." Just to be clear, when I say "juvenile offenders", I'm referring to people who were under the age of 18 at the time of their offence (although I assume you realize this). No matter, though — I have a better idea for a hook anyways:
ALT1"... that Yemen has one of the highest execution rates in the world?"
How's that? It's a statement of fact, not biased one way or another, and an interesting tidbit that not everyone would be aware of. Kurtis (talk) 21:49, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
That looks like a viable alt, although I haven't checked its sourcing yet. I will still want to make a couple of tweaks to the article before giving it the go-ahead though. Gatoclass (talk) 02:44, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
Sure, you go right ahead. In fact, I'd be glad to have someone else contribute to it in some way or another. Kurtis (talk) 03:46, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
Okay, I've made a couple of additions to the text, if they are acceptable to you, I think we can move forward with this nomination. BTW, with regard to some of your comments above - I had to review a lot of sources, not only for this article but for some others last night and it looks as if I somehow missed the info about the more recent executions, my apologies for that. With regard to the "estimated" 14 executions between 2006 and 2010, I'm sure I came across a source that described it as an "estimate" but it may not have been in the article itself as I sometimes look for confirmation by searching for additional sources. I haven't found the same source yet but I'm sure it's out there; however, I note that even your linked source above only uses the word "indicated". It could hardly be anything other than an estimate since so many Yemenis reportedly lack I.D. Gatoclass (talk) 10:00, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
I have dropped the "estimated" because after a further search I was unable to confirm it. Gatoclass (talk) 10:54, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
Thank you so much for your contributions, I really appreciate it. And I think it's ready to be up for DYK. Do you agree? Kurtis (talk) 11:19, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
  • Symbol confirmed.svg Thanks. ALT1 verified. Gatoclass (talk) 11:37, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
