  • ... that Delaware State Commissioner of Education Arthur R. M. Spaid (pictured) was a naturalist by hobby, and detailed his nature studies through illustrated articles and lectures? Source: "Professor Spaid is Commissioner of Education of the State of Delaware..." "His chief hobby for years has been nature study." "He has photographed hundreds of objects in nature, using the pictures for illustrating nature study articles. Several hundred of these studies have been used for making slides for illustrated lectures." (Source 1) Note: Additional supporting citations can be found throughout this article.

  • Template:U, thank you for taking the time to complete this thoughtful and thorough review! I concur with your thoughts regarding ALT2, and would support that hook for DYK. Thank you again! — West Virginian (talk) 04:16, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
  • Nihonjoe, the only problem I see with ALT2 is the "hundreds of lectures" assertion. There are two places I saw where the article gives numbers of lectures, both times "100", and for overlapping periods: the 1903–1905 period explicitly, and the period of being New Castle superintendent, which appears to have been 1903 to 1913. The sources are 1905 and 1919 articles in the Evening Journal, so they didn't increase the number in the later of the two articles despite the passage of fourteen years. Under the circumstances, it doesn't seem safe to use "hundreds", though "over a hundred" ought to be, since at least one post-1913 lecture is documented. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:47, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

  • With all due respect, Nihonjoe, as the proposer of ALT2 and ALT3, you may not approve either of them. Both ALTs contain significant changes from the original hook, and thus need an independent reviewer to sign off on them. If I felt ready to approve ALT3 based on my checks, I would have done so, and I did not.

Template:Re With all due respect, BlueMoonset, how about you do it, then, instead of trying to pawn it off on someone else? It will take you all of five minutes (if that). The changes between the various proposals are hardly "significant" in any sense of the word. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 22:59, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

Symbol question.svg In the "Early life and education" section, what is the source of the last two sentences of the second paragraph which outline his education? I have struck ALT0 since I agree with the above comment that it is cumbersome. I have struck ALT2 since I agree with the above comment about using "hundreds" ALT3 looks plausible to use. Flibirigit (talk) 03:03, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

  • Flibirigit, as there never has been an ALT1, I believe you meant "ALT2" when you wrote "ALT1", and "ALT3" when you wrote "ALT2". However, as no hooks were actually struck, I can't be sure. Please strike the relevant hooks when you get the chance. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:06, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
  • Template:U, thank you for your notification. Template:U, thank you for this catch. I've deleted the sentences in question, as they contain content that is sourced in other parts of the article. These sentences may have been accidentally added during a recent copyedit or review of the article. Please let me know if you identify anything else outstanding with the article that would preclude it from passing DYK. Thanks again to you both. -- West Virginian (talk) 17:02, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
