Usage

This template is used for citing the online version of the two volume Dictionary of American Naval Aviation Squadrons (DANAS). Both volumes are hosted on the United States Navy Naval History & Heritage Command (NHHC) website.[1][2] {{Cite DANAS}} is a wrapper template for {{cite book}}.

Parameters

{{Cite DANAS}} takes four parameters, of which only one is required:

  • |volume= – (required) the two DANAS volumes are located in different places on the NHHC website, have different authors and publication datess; |volume= is used by the template to choose the correct values. When |volume= is missing or empty, the template emits this error message: {{cite DANAS}} missing value for |volume=.
  • |section= – the online version of DANAS is divided into chapters and sections of chapters. For the purposes of this template, all chapters, chapter sections, appendices, glossaries, indexes, are treated as sections. The value assigned to |section= is used to calculate page number offsets (see |page=). The |section= parameter takes as a value that part of the section's url that is the document's file name without extension:
    • the url for the section in volume 1, chapter 2 that contains data about VA-144 is:
      https://www.history.navy.mil/content/dam/nhhc/research/histories/naval-aviation/dictionary-of-american-naval-aviation-squadrons-volume-1/pdfs/va125-153.pdf
    • the file name portion used in |section= is: va125-153 (https://www.history.navy.mil/.../va125-153.pdf)
    • the value assigned to |section= is case sensitive
      For volume 1: chapter1 and chapter4 but Chapter3, Chapter5, Chapter6
  • |article= – title of the section to which this citation refers
  • |page= – page number where the referenced information is located. The value assigned to |page= is used with tabulated data to calculate a page offest value that is appended to the citation's url so that when readers click the citation link, they may go directly to the appropriate page (known to work with Chrome's pdf viewer). If omitted, the url links to the first page of the section. For references to the front matter where page numbers are lowercase roman numerals, use the roman numeral; the template automatically maps these to the appropriate offset.

The individual chapters and sections are listed at NHHC:
