Purpose

This template is for creating a properly-formatted reference citation to articles in Billiards Digest magazine, frequently cited in cue sports articles (see WikiProject Cue sports for more information). It is almost always used inside <ref name="BDMag YYYY-XX"></ref> (with the date). The benefit of the template is that it automatically provides the publisher, issn, location, and journal parameters of {{Cite journal}} for you.

Usage

{{BDMag
|title=
|date=
|url=
|volume=
|issue=
|pages=
|first=
|last=
|access-date=
}}

The template uses the same (relevant) parameter names as {{Cite journal}}. The |title= parameter is required. If the cited item is a regular feature (such as a mini-column), use the feature's name as the title, e.g. |title=Calendar. If the feature has no by-line, simply omit the |first= and |last= parameters, use the last name of the managing editor, and first name of the managing editor followed by "(ed.)". The volume and issue are slightly complicated to figure out if you don't have the issue on hand any longer. The issue number is the number of the month +1, from January to November, and is "1" for December, ever since BD went monthly, many years ago. New Volumes begin in December. (e.g. July = issue 8), and Dec. 2009 through Nov. 2010 is volume 32 (ergo most of 1999 is vol. 21, and most of 2015 will be vol. 37).

The url parameter of {{Cite journal}} is supported, and can be used to link to specific issues, but these online copies are often available by subscription. If the article requires paid subscription, add the |pay=y parameter to add a note that a subscription is required. (Do not use "|pay=n" to indicate free content; that won't work). and adding the URL parameter will also automatically. For free BilliardsDigest.com material such as their "Headstring News" feed, use {{Cite web}} instead of this template, which is for the magazine (and online copies thereof).

If you need to cite the same source in the same article more than once, use <ref name="BDMag YYYY-XX" /> for the subsequent citations. See {{rp}} if a page number is needed in subsequent citations.

If only one page or page range needs to be cited in this source in the article, simply add the page number(s) with the page or pages parameter, as appropriate (without "p." or "pp.").

This template cannot be subst'd, unless this is done before it is put inside <ref...></ref> (due to a bug in the <ref> and <references /> system). There is no particular reason to subst it anyway.
