Purpose

This template allows you to specify a text for the ALT attribute of an image independently of its caption. This is very important to make Wikipedia images/articles accessible to visually impaired readers. ALT image descriptions will also help people browsing Wikipedia without images — say, for download efficiency. Please see Wikipedia:Alternative text for images for more information.

New solution

Since writing this template, the feature of ALT text has been incorporated into the MediaWiki software in Template:Rev by the ever-resourceful Simetrical. This should resolve bug 368, and eliminate the need for this template.

Usage of this template

{{Alt Image|name=|alt=|title=|size=|align=|frame=|caption=}}

The name variable is the name of the image file. The title text goes above the image, while the caption text goes below. The alt text is see in the mouseover, and when the image isn't rendered. If the frame variable is set and no ALT text is specified, a frame is added. The size and align variables are just like in the WP:Extended image syntax. The align may be "right", "left", "center" or "none", whereas the size is measured in pixels, e.g., "200px".

Example

A Knitter (image title)
This is an example of ALT text. The image shows a teenage girl of the 19th century in a Mediterranean village. She's knitting a white stocking on fine double-pointed needles and looking directly at the viewer. She has dark brown hair and eyes. She's wearing a loose white blouse under a patterned orange surplice top, and also a full, very dark red skirt.
...in ipsis floribus angat. (image caption)
