In November 2009, Rockstar Games published an online multiplier action-adventure game Red Dead Online. The game was released for PS4, Xbox one in May 2009, and for Stadia and Microsoft Windows in November 2009. A player plays a character who is freed from jail after framed for murder. Red Dead Online can be played up to four players to advance the story. Also, the player will encounter events and side mission for some additional in-game rewards. [1] The game is mainly using third-person perspective. However, during in aiming mode, the player controls first-person perspective. As an open world game, the player can roam across the map with horse or on foot. The player can shout out, heists, hunt, ride a horse, interact with NPC or other players, and gain moral honor through choices and deeds. Red Dead Online players used in-game currency for buying supplies and gold for buying special items. The gold is purchasable with real money or it can be obtained through converting 100 nuggets from challenges into gold bars. Also, special online feature featured in the ability cards can increase the power level on the character. The cards are available by achieving certain rank and purchasable at the in-game shop. Then, the cards can be upgraded with experience or in-game currency. The game is a normal. It does not any particular racism. However, the players do.

About the Game

Red Dead Online is part of Red Dead Redemption 2. RDO 2 players can access the Red Dead Online without additional cost but not including some in-game items which can be purchased with cash. The graphic, gameplay, items were indistinguishable from RDO 2. Players can do co-op missions together. Horse race, hunting bounty, and side quests are available in wild-west setting [2] It sounds fun, and it is how the game was developed for. The main sell point of the game is its rich narrative elements and a gorgeous decor [3] No wonder the game nominated for Best Multiplayer Game at 2019 by Golder Joystick Award. [4]

The game encountered several issues whether a bug or input. They gathered complaints for improvement in a future update. In December 14, 2018, the developer response griefing which ruins players experience with “Anti-griefing measure” [5]. In September 2019, the players can choose Bounty Hunters, Traders, and Collectors as their role[6] As the developer fixes the issues in the game, hopefully, they also listen about the racial attack by some racist players and provide punishment with penalties through in-game report system.

Controversy

Although the game is popular among online players, the game black game players feel that the environment is harmful. In Red Dead Online, the player can create their avatar. They choose what they want. While it is good to have black character available, the in-game environment is not so hostile for black characters. On tweeter, some players curses the black as the source of their misery [7] They call black people “Darkies”. Louis, Red Dean Online player, while playing as white in MMO games is “hit and miss”, being black in Red Dead Online makes him the target. People are shouting with n-words in every corner of the game. The experience can be totally anarchy at a time [8].

The reasonable explanation about the racism is perhaps the design of the game level which is in the historical setting in which cowboy exists in western 1899 to 1907 [9] Thus, some players are carried out with the act of racism. The setting presents in the western during cowboy and slavery exists. Similarly, HipHopWired contributor, Bernard Smalls, said that the game setting made it different. The setting, wild west, that contains part of realism makes some players feel it is the right place to do it. At that period of time, Although not all of the players play in that offensive way, racism still exists in the community through chat or voice feature in the game.
