Poetry

Racism has a human heart,

An artery of cruelty & death,

It has blood of anger, & evil…,

Has a force of pain & antipathy.

Racism has a human mind….

An Intellect of terror & delusion,

Has an emotion of extreme savage

Imagination of vile ideas, macabre.

Racism has a human mouth,

It has tongue of torture, depravity,

Many teeth of brutal incision & kill

Has a lip of sorrow, hate & death. [2]

The main theme of this poem is racism, in which as a part of human elements, that human beings take part, participate, and produce racism. In the first stanza, racism was personified, “Racism has a human heart / An artery of cruelty & death”, the metaphor used as a comparison to racism to the things that used to personify racism. When racism describes racism as having a human heart and an artery of cruelty, suggesting that racism is powerful, controlling, and potent like the human heart. While racism compared to cruelty and death, this expres how awful and frightening racism is. The personifications and metaphors used effective in showing how racism is pessimistic and controlling.

Anaphora is also used in this poem, “Racism has a human…” This repetitive phrase conveys a clear concise message that racism shares many characteristics that embody in the human beings.

The irony presented in Racism Has a Human Heart to show that racism has an intellect, projects an image of positive notions, but the words terror and delusion complete opposite to what expected. [4]

This poem also compares racism to human beings and their actions. One’s heart can express feelings of anger and evil. It is the same way with mind, which can cause mass problems and hate throughout the world. [5]
