This book tells about a little South African boy as he goes on a shopping trip to the city with his – not so fast anymore – grandmother. [1]

Summary

A good story of young and old, full of the colours and smells of an African township. Songololo goes into the city with Gogo to help her do the shopping. Gogo walks very slowly, but Songololo likes to take his time as well. Grandmother and grandson had fun a leisurely stroll around the busy African city, ending with a special reward for Songololo, for helping Gogo so well. [2]

Pros

One of the reader gave the comment about this book. This book showed a beautiful family portrait of life in Apartheid South Africa, oozing with love. The difficult journey the Black grandmother and her grandson face to buy shoes which, for them, are an expensive purchase us subtly told and illustrated. It also suitable for primary school children. Children’s literature is the body of written works and along with amazing illustrations to entertain or instruct young children. This literature is shaped to address children’s needs at their level of understanding. The children need to embrace their imaginative world and daily environment. These needs differ from one society to another, and are guided by the social and cultural conditions of the society in which the children live. An experienced author of children’s literature will always consider the social and cultural backgrounds of the children for whom the book is to be written [4]
