Mindbody is a San Luis Obispo, California-based software-as-a-service or SaaS company[1]. MindBody’s product is online business management software that offers one Web-based system for business owners to perform a range of functions, from scheduling appointments and managing staff to processing customer payments, all accessible to business owners and clients on the Web and mobile apps.[2]

Mindbody was originally known as HardBody Software. The latter was co-founded by Blake Beltram, Rick Stollmeyer, and Robert Murphy in 2000.[2] The company was later incorporated as Mindbody in 2001. The company services over 58,000 health and wellness businesses with about 35 million consumers located in over 130 countries and territories. The company's clients include Bikram Yoga and New York Health & Racquet Club. ClassPass is one of Mindbody's technology partners using Mindbody's API to manage inventory on the ClassPass app.[3]

Commitment to build anti-racist community

MBUnited

MBUnited, a diverse council of minority and allied team members whose mission is to “promote intercultural dialogue, awareness, and increased opportunities for all minorities both within Mindbody and in minority communities." This team is helping Mindbody determine what actions they should take in this moment and how they can transform their company for the sustainable future.

Mindbody will make a $100K donation to the organizations that can have the biggest impact, an amount that will be matched by CEO and co-founder, Rick Stollmeyer. The MBUnited team is helping to determine which organizations they should help fund in the fight to end racism and police brutality.[4]

Employment and hiring practices

Mindbody commited to reevaluate their hiring practices to expand the diversity of the teams, and annually review their compensation system to ensure they are paying team members equitably. Mindbody must also reassess their internal promotion process to guarantee that Black and minority team members have equal opportunity for career advancement within Mindbody.

They are building racial harassment awareness into theirstandard training in all countries in which Mindbosy operate and adding a zero-tolerance racial discrimination policy to their employee handbook. Additionally, Mindbody also create mentorship programs that seek to provide more avenues for professional growth and promote employee retention among minority team members.[4]

Education

Mindbody focused their attention on educating their team, through formal education such as small group trainings and larger webinars teaching us about our Unconscious Bias, How to be an Inclusive Leader, How to Cope with Civil Unrest, and Raising Diversity in the Home, and through informal education such as fireside-like conversations with our team members, hearing their specific experiences with racism. One key learning they have had recently at Mindbody is around a word they commonly used to use, 'ally.' They have had to shift the meaning of being an ally, as something active vs. something passive. Mindbody have asked their employees to be active allies and stand up and share their thoughts and experiences on these topics. Mindbody have given their employees a new volunteer day off to be used July-September 2020 to volunteer for an organization of their choice and focus on a way they can actively create change. If all 1,200 employees give 8 hours, this will give almost 10,000 hours of active work to create the change we need in this world."[5]
