Plot

Thurgood Marshall (Chadwick Boseman) was sent by NAACP to Connecticut to defend an African chauffeur for falsely accused of raping and sexual assault on his employer. He goes to Greenwich, Connecticut, and meets Joseph Spell, the man who claimed to be innocent. As Marshall tries to get approval to be an out of state attorney, Sam Freidman was recommended to obtain the approval. Then, Freidman agrees to get Marshall the approval by the judge. Finally, the judge approves Marshall as an attorney though he was forbidden to speak in the trial. The trial goes ups and downs. In the end, the jury said that Joseph is innocent as actually, the woman and Joseph were lovers and there is not any sexual assault [3].

Black Empowerment

Around that time, justice was not served equally, especially to African Americans. In the scene, it has been shown from the very start that Marshall, who is an African American New Yorker attorney, has no right to speak during the trial as said by the jury. Several media at that time says that the trial has shown America that justice is not served to everyone. However, Marshall and Friedman collaborate and give their best effort in defending the innocent African American victim of the falsely accused. Marshall says "Here in America, our differences aren't supposed to matter. Here, we're promised equal protection under the law"[4].
