A beautiful picture book for sharing and marking special occasions such as graduation, inspired by the life of the first African American woman to travel in space, Mae Jemison [1]

Summary

Inspired by the life of the first African American woman to travel in space, Mae Jemison.

When she was a young girl, Mae was a child, she dreamed of dancing in space. She imagined herself surrounded by billions of stars, floating, gliding, and discovering.

She wanted to be an astronaut. She wanted to see the space.

Her mom told her, "If you believe it, and work hard for it, anything is possible.”

Her curiosity, intelligence, and determination, matched with her parents' encouraging words, paved the way for her success at NASA as the first African American woman to travel in space. [2]

Pros

The illustrations in this book elevate the story into the next level. The rich colours and imaginative drawings bring each page to life. The illustrations are so vivid that one page in particular stands out from the rest because it is depicted in a muted blue, representing Mae’s gloomy response to her teacher’s disapproval of her dream of becoming an astronaut. Eventough the story tackles the deep-rooted issues of racial and gender stereotypes, the writing is simple enough for young readers to connect with Mae’s story while still inspiring them to reach for the stars or to be whatever they wanted to be. [3]

The emphasis on Jemison's lifelong passion for space science will inspire young readers to have confidence in the trajectory of their own interests. Burrington's bright, it has children friendly illustrations that created with ink and Adobe Photoshop. An epilogue provides the dates and details of Jemison's life and career. [4]
