Plot

King and Carmichael in the King in the Wilderness.[2]

The film shows how the final years of Martin Luther King Jr.. Clarence Jones says that the last 18 months before the assassination was King's most difficult time. Throughout his final years, he fights with his self-doubt, the struggle of fighting racism non-violently, which takes his physical and emotional energy within him. His battle is resisted by many organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and several politicians. King goes even further not only fighting for civil rights, he also opposes the Vietnam war which ultimately gets confronted by many of his colleagues. Yet, he still fights for what he believes, not only fighting for African American rights but also everyone, every race that exists despite the anxiety and fear that he has to faced[3].

Black Empowerment

King had not taken a break in fighting racism for 11 years. The struggle was real. It can be seen that King was devastated yet, many people were inspired by his action. The empowerment he brought was not just a bus boycott or march. It can be seen in his final years he decided to integrate neighborhoods. He lays down several times to the demonstration in Chicago fighting for housing rights. The memorial events such as the I Have a Dream speech, Bus Boycott, the 1964 Civil Rights Act, and the 1965 Voting Rights Act has become one of the most profounding legacies for African Americans to have equal rights with everyone[4].

Controversy

We can see the chaos due to racism in the 60s. For instance, riots that occur in the King's campaign on fighting for African American rights. The police brutality towards African Americans are ferocious, most African Americans are beaten with batons and even guns. Moreover, the Ku Klux Klan has killed several people that cause social rage among Americans. This eventually leads to fighting racism with violence where King does not want to use violence as a way of fighting racism. It all because King wants to prove that violence could lead to polarization, where prejudice would surge even higher[5]
