I Am Enough by Grace Byers
This is the perfect gift for mothers and daughters, baby showers, and graduation.[1]
Summary
Parents need to know that I Am Enough is a New York Times bestselling picture book written by Grace Byers and illustrated by Keturah Bobo. It features an African American girl who celebrates herself by perceiving the ways she resembles beautiful things in the world around her -- including people who look different. The illustrations have only girls (no boys and no adults). The girls depicted are very diverse: They have different skin colors, with some in wheelchairs and others wearing hijabs. They engage in solitary as well as cooperative activities. The activities are also diverse, including martial arts, swinging, and playing with a wagon full stuffed animals. [2]
Pros
This book lends a whimsical feel to such details as a rainbow, a window, wind, and rain—all reminiscent of Harold and the Purple Crayon. Bobo creates an inclusive world of girls in which wearing glasses, using a wheelchair, wearing a head scarf, and having a big Afro are unconditionally accepted rather than markers for othering. A pro-girl book with illustrations that far outshine the text. [3]
This is one of picture book choices that parents and teachers might like children to read, and the illustrations depict a large cast of diverse characters, but there are so many different children that there is no continuity established or story line developed [4]
