"Hands Up, Don't Shoot" became a catch line for protests in Ferguson following MIchael Brown’s death by a white police officer in the Missouri town. Though the song was released a month after the incident, the singer Staples denied that this was about the Ferguson tragedy. He clarified that this is a general response about abusive authority on American civilians. [2]

His story about the police brutality and broken system along with his anger, will resonate more broadly. [3]

"I record when I have something to say," Vince Staples told, In an interview with Pitchfork.

Hand Up addresses a far more messed up state of nation. "North Division tryin' to stop my blackness/ I'm watchin' for them badges when out in traffic," he starts, before mentioning two names of men killed by police last year, DeAngelo Lopez and Tyler Woods, following with his statement: Shoot him first without a warning/ And they expect respect and non-violence/ I refuse the right to be silent."
