Hair Love is an American animated short film released in 2019. Written and directed by Matthew A. Cherry and co-produced by Karen Rupert Toliver. A children's book of the same name is also released in May 2019 illustrated by Vashti Harrison. Hair love won Best Animated Short Film at the 92nd Academy Awards. The short film has garnered a lot of attention and popularity, and soon will be expanded into a series entitled " Young Love " on HBO Max with Matthew A. Cherry and Carl Jones as showrunners.[1]. The series will explore the world of the Young family-including millennial parents Stephen and Angela, their daughter Zuri and her pet cat Rocky-as they juggle their careers, marriage, parenthood, social issues, and multi-generational dynamics all while striving to make a better life for themselves[2].

Plot

The short film illustrates the relationship between an African-American father, his daughter Zuri and the daunting task for the father to do his daughter hair for the first time.

Empowerment

The short film was created by Cherry to normalize Black hair. The receptions of the show reflected that the story resonates well with people everywhere, especially fathers who found themselves in a similar situation[3]. Hair Love was first launched as a Kickstarter project, and was born out of seeing a lack of representation in mainstream animated projects, while promoting hair love amongst young men and women of color[4].
