The beautiful story of Gwendolyn Brooks and her interesting journey to be the first Black person to get the Pulitzer Prize. As a young girl she was constantly writing, even when the Great Depression struck, she felt lost or she lost electricity, still she turned to her pen and it made her feel alive. Even through the difficult times she was hopeful and determined. The illustrations are whimsical and gorgeous describing such a wonderful and main story about such an influential person. [3]
