Racist Tweet

Via Twitter.

Following the hype of Apple's new emoji, which offers various skin tones, including faces with brown and black skin. In April 2015, Clorox wanted to get into the hype by commenting on the new emojis series through Twitter. However, the tweet was taken wrongly, and the brand was criticized for being racist. Clorox wrote in the tweet, which was deleted soon after, "New emojis are alright, but where's the bleach." followed by an image of a bottle made out of emojis..[3]

Twitter users took the tweet by Clorox as an offense which sparks controversy. Many people felt that the company provokes that the new emojis, which contain black-skinned characters, need to be bleached. Soon after receiving a lot of comments and complaints, the company deleted the tweet and stated an apology:

"Wish we could bleach away our last tweet. Didn't mean to offend - it was meant to be about all the [toilet, bathtub and red wine] emojis that could use a clean up."

A spokesperson of Clorox, Molly Steinkrauss, also apologized for the event. "It was never our intention to offend. We did not mean for this to be taken as a specific reference to the diversity emojis -- but we should have been more aware of the news around this. The tweet was meant to be light-hearted but it fell flat."[4]

Supports to Black lives Matter

Clorox announced that they would make an immediate and lasting impact for Black people in their communities, and it starts a donation of $2.5 million focusing on three areas: supporting Black businesses in its communities impacted by recent events; engaging Black youth who represent the future, and accelerating Black community access to justice and criminal justice reform.[5]

This investment will build on their long-standing support for the underserved, including the East Oakland Youth Development Center (EOYDC), which Clorox helped found in 1978. Their employee resource groups will decide how to deploy some of this donation toward fighting racism, injustice, and inequality. They will enlist more Clorox teammates to contribute their passions and skills by working with these and other organizations.[6]

As their responsibility within the company, they also committed to do more than what they are doing now, which are:

  • Every executive team member will volunteer with organizations that fight for equality and justice
  • Increase company spending with minority- and women-owned businesses
  • Doubling investment to address conscious and unconscious bias
  • Increase company recruiting focus on underserved communities.[6]
