CELINE (formerly spelled CÉLINE) is a French ready-to-wear and leather luxury goods brand that has been owned by LVMH group since 1996. Celine was founded by Céline Vipiana and her husband Richard in 1945 as a made-to-measure children’s shoe boutique that was located at 52 rue Malte. The shop was denoted by a highly distinct red elephant logo created by cartoonist Raymont Peynet.[1] Since November 2015, the headquarters are located at 16 rue Vivienne in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris at the Hôtel Colbert de Torcy, which has French Historic Monument classification. Séverine Merle is the Chief Executive Officer since April 2017.[2]

On January 21, 2018, LVMH announced that Hedi Slimane will take over at Celine as its artistic, creative and image director.[3]

Controversy

In June 2020, celebrity stylist Jason Bolden called out Celine for the racial discrimination that they have done all these time, right after the brand uploaded a post that support Black Lives Matter protests.[4] Bolden left a comment on the post, said that Celine does not dress Black celebrities unless they have white stylist.

The fashion industry's watchdog Instagram account Diet Prada shared a screenshot of Bolden's comment alongside a lengthy caption detailing the low percentage of Black models cast in Celine's most recent runway shows. Since designer Hedi Slimane took over as Celine's creative director in February 2018, Diet Prada stated that in all six of his fashion shows, less than 15 percent of looks were shown on Black models (The statistics listed in Diet Prada's Instagram post align with show coverage that has been published). The highest number of Black models that involved in the last six runway shows was on Fall 2019 Womenswear Collection, with 12% or 7 Black models out of 59 exits.[5]
