Trey Songz’s new track 2020 Riots: How Many Times is a response to the police brutality and institutionalized racism of the death George Floyd.

“Three or four nights ago I woke up in the middle of my sleep…I couldn’t sleep. My chest was hurting. I got up and called my producer, Troy Taylor and I said ‘We’ve got to make music that really touches the soul, that really addresses what the world is feeling right now. Especially our people,'” Songz said in a statement. “So we came up with ‘2020 Riots: How Many Times.’ With the words in this song I just wanted to speak to everyone’s hearts and acknowledge the pain and anguish everyone is going through right now. I know this ain’t usually my message and you’re not used to hearing this from me, but this is the person I’ve always been.”

Profits from his new song will benefit Black Lives Matter and National Bail Fund Network. The song became the latest song as a protest anthem following the killing of George Floyd by police. [2]

During the celebration of the Juneteenth holiday, Songz also spoke on the country’s current event and how it affects us in the worst ways. “I know a brother, he’s 17 years old, he said he’s tired. I’m twice his age and I’m tired, my grand-daddy was tired before he passed. ...they’re hurting my soul… I can’t sleep sometimes… I’m scared for my son. This could be any one of us, any given day. They’re taking our lives as if they can and keep walking… Keep living their life, go home to their families after they take one of ours. I ain’t going… We not going for that.” [3]

Below is the powerful part of lyrics from Trey Songz's Editing 2020 Riots: How Many Times:

[Intro]

Hmm

I just gotta get some things off my chest

Tough times, I hope y'all holdin' up

We'll be aight 'cause we always is

But I'm feelin' like this

[Chorus]

How many mothers have to cry?

How many brothers gotta die?

How many more times?

How many more times?

How many more marches?

How many more signs?

How many more lives?

How many more times? [4]
