Plot

In finding America's history of institutional racism, it is explained the racism started 400 years ago. Then, lynching, white supremacist groups, and brutality towards African Americans are explained throughout the USA's history. As the director researches and goes further, his mother tells him to dig his own family history. He finds that his family was actually helped the establishment of racism 400 years ago. His descendants were slave owners in the pre-Civil War South and eventually created white supremacist attitudes. However, his mother has ended the white supremacist attitude in his family, and contribute to the demonstration of racial discrimination. She and her son which is Loki Mulholland believe that it is their responsibility as white people to end racism[3].

Black Empowerment

As can be seen, Mulholland tries to end racism throughout the movie by showing the history of how racism was established. He explains that fighting racism can be done through education as he has done it by founding the Joan Trumpaue Mulholland Foundation. Not only that, his mother, Joan Trumpauer Mulholland explained the participation she had done before in racism demonstrations including the Freedom Rides, the Jackson Woolworth's Sit-in, the March on Washington, and the Selma to Montgomery March. Although they are the descendants of the slave owners, they believe it is their responsibility to end racism. As Mulholland says "Racism is a white person problem that we always ask African Americans to solve for us. African Americans obviously have to deal with the effects of racism, but racism is a white disease, I say to people: ‘Look. If white people created white supremacy, which we did, we should be at the forefront of dismantling it. It takes all voices, but white people shouldn’t be leaving it to everyone else to do our work for us — which is educating ourselves, talking about this, and listening to Black people"[4].

Controversy

The film displays how racism was established in the USA. For instance, the film explains how the KKK (the white supremacist group) was reborn and eventually assaults many African Americans. Moreover, it is displayed how white people lynch African Americans for their innocence, rape African American girls, mock and call them the n-word. They even kill African Americans without hesitation and feel like enjoying the show of slow death as the African Americans were burnt to ashes [5].
