Static Shock is an American superhero animated television series produced by Warner Bros. Animation loosely based on the Milestone Media/DC Comics superhero Static created by Dwayne McDuffie and Denys Cowan. Premiered in September 2020 on the Kids'WB, the show ran for 4 seasons, spanning over 52 half-hour episodes[1]. The show was later picked-up for rebroadcast by Cartoon Network. The show was no stranger to tackling social issues, including gun violence.

Plot

The show centers around the adventures of DC Comics superhero Virgil Ovid Hawkins/Static. The series predates the re-appearance of Static in the main DC continuity by several years. Set in the city of Dakota, after the event know as "The Big Bang" Virgil, a fourteen-year-old African-American, obtain a special power and ability to create, generate, absorb, control electricity and magnetism and become known as "Static". The affected people who gain abilities and mutated from the event are known as "Bang Babies"[2].

Black Empowerment

In an interview, the show creator shared his inspiration behind the concept of the show. A superhero that include characters that kind of looked like him, who had the same background, experiences and dreams as he did. He wanted to create something fun that a new generation would respond to the same way he responded to his childhood heroes[3].
