Plot

Sarah in Spinning into Butter[3]

Sarah Daniels (Sarah Jessica Parker) is appointed to be the dean at Belmont College. In the second year, she tries to assist a gifted student, Patrick Chibas (Victor Rasuk), to get a scholarship. She tells him to claim as a Hispanic race though he wants to be called Puerto Rican from New York when the scholarship committee asks him. In near time, discrimination goes wild as Simon Brick (Paul James), a black American student, gets a racist note on the door of his locker. Eventually, the polices investigate the news with the university president (James Rebhorn) and deans (Miranda Richardson and Beau Bridges). The riot then occurs between races and Dean Parker's past exposed. Later, she is found that she was a teacher in one of the schools in Lancaster where major students are African Americans. Her paranoia and prejudice towards African Americans raise due to an incident at the school. That's why he moves to Belmont College where most students are white. In the end, she makes a ten-point list to resolve the racism in Belmont College[4].

Controversy

The movie shows that discrimination and prejudice still exist in college and universities in America. It is portrayed in the scene when Simon gets racist notes. What even worse is the college tries to silence the non-white students especially black Americans. One of the scenes also shows that one of the white students tells black students that a ghetto is a place where black Americans belong. The conflict even causes a race riot between the white students and non-white students including African American students[5].
