According to the World Health Organization (WHO), skin whitening is an industry that is growing at the fastest pace. It's estimated to worth $31.2 billion U.S. by 2024.[1] White has become a beauty standard for a long time. Women who have white skin, blonde hair, and facial features close to the European are seen as beauty while women outside of that standard are considered less beautiful. Black and brown women who have the similar face and body features to European — lighter skin, straight hair, skinnier waist— are praised for their 'difference' and 'exotic.' Yet, women of color with "unfamiliar features" are exposed to more prejudice and discrimination.[2]
