According to the World Health Organization (WHO), skin whitening is an industry that is growing at the fastest pace. It's estimated to worth $31.2 billion U.S. by 2024.[1] Due to the widespread colonialism in the 1800s, European societal norms lingered in societies that took away their own values of beauty.[2] Women who have white skin, blonde hair, and facial features close to the European are seen as beauty while women outside of that standard are considered less beautiful. Black and brown women who have similar face and body features to European — lighter skin, straight hair, skinnier waist— are praised for their 'difference' and 'exotic.' Yet, women of color with "unfamiliar features" are exposed to more prejudice and discrimination.[3]
