ISSA Cover Album by 21 Savage

“Nothin New” is a song by rapper known as 21 Savage, that included in his debut studio album called “ISSA” which was released on July 7, 2017. The song, produced by Metro Boomin and Zaytoven, directly touches on how people misinterpret his music while hooks identify oppression. The video for 21 Savage’s “Nothin New” was shot by iNightLyfe in association with FoolWithTheCamera.

The song addresses the topic of systemic and institutional racism directly. The Atlanta rapper's change in tone was a direct response to critics who felt he only rapped about drugs, women and violence.[1]

Controversy

21 Savage addresses police brutality in his latest video for "Nothin New." It started with a series of news clips from people talking about police shootings, racism, and the NFL national anthem protests. It also features snippets of Colin Kaepernick, Barack Obama, and LeBron James at a press conference discussing the "U bum" tweet addressed to Donald Trump.

The visuals for "Nothin New" follows a young black girl whose mother is an addict and her father is in prison waching the news behind the bar. It leading into a sequence of events that shows a girl being led down the wrong path. And another scene shows that same young girl robbing a store, before being followed by the police and getting shot and killed. It's a deep video that deals with the systemic racism in America while showcasing it through the eyes of a young girl who lived through the cycle.[2]

With lyrics at the chorus part, 21 says that there is nothing new. Saying that it has become the social norm in these cities and that they have no choice but to resort to violence or deal with it if they wish to lead an acceptable lifestyle, makes him a possible example.

According to Mapping Police Violence, an organization that aims to highlight police shootings in the US, indicates that black people are 23% of those killed by police even though only 13% of the population. It became normal to see black people on the news because they were murdered.[3]
