Diredted by Charless Burnett this 57 minutes based on Nat Turner's story of rebbellion in Southampton County, Virginiat, 1831. This movie tells the story of that violent confrontation and of the ways that story has been continuously re-told during the years since 1831. It is a film about a critical moment in American history and of the multiple ways in which that moment has since been remembered.[1]

Plot

Set In 1831, Nat Turner led a slave revolt in the United States that ended in the murder of local slave owners and their families, the death at the hands of 55 rebels and the revenge of more than 200 innocent slaves. Nat Turner: A Troublesome Property explores how, throughout history, the story of Turner's rebellion has been viewed and how new questions continue to emerge regarding the essence of terrorism and other forms of violent resistance to oppression. The film takes on a creative concept by interweaving documentary footage and interviewing the dramatization of these various interpretations of Turner's story. A unique partnership between MacArthur Genius Award-winning director Charles Burnett, acclaimed slave historian Kenneth S. Greenberg, and award-winning documentary producer Frank Christopher, Nat Turner is a fascinating look at one of the most enigmatic figures in history.[2]

Black Empowerment

Nat Turners is a radical icon in the struggle for African-American civil rights who led the rebellion of slavery in Southampton County, Virginia, In 1931. A descendant of Nat Turner, Bruce Turner, speaks powerfully of Turner's theory “That evil that he saw was what was needed to be destroyed. And the only way to force the destruction of that evil was to make the price so high that those who were practicing slavery would eventually sue for peace and say, ‘We cannot keep slavery because it will cost us too much.’” It means if he continued to rebel, the white people will think twice over making black people as a slave. [3]

Controversy

Because of its violence and murder in Southhampton County, Virginia this movie get some critics. He an his small band that he led killing all the white people no matter they are child or a woman and it makes white people took some revenge and also executed many slaves. The families of Turner and his white victims also add their perceptions of the man and his place in history. Turner appears to some as an inspirational hero and visionary, and to others as a villain and a cold-blooded killer of women and children. "Turner emerges as an inspiring hero and revolutionary to some, and as a villain and cold-blooded murderer of women and children to others."[4]

But in the end of the uprising the black people still dont get the equality because the historian Eric Foner says that "The names of the white victims are known, but not those of the black ones—neither the rebels nor other black people who were killed by whites in revenge."[5]
