Plot

Alex Hibbert (left) and Mahershala Ali in Moonlight (2016), directed by Barry Jenkins.

The film is divided into three chapters in three periods, namely "little", "chiron" and "black". These three names are used to refer to the same person we follow from adolescence to childhood.

In the first act, Juan, a prosperous drug dealer, sees a young boy fleeing from a group of boys trying to beat him, and follows the boy into an abandoned apartment, where he locks himself up for safety. The kid (Alex Hibbert) refuses to chat but allows Juan to purchase a meal for him. Juan and his girlfriend Teresa took him home. The boy said his name was Chiron but he is named Little, but he refused to disclose his residence until the next morning. Juan sent him back to his mother, who was a cocaine user who abused the boy emotionally. For Chiron, who didn't know how to get along with other boys nearby, Juan and Teresa became alternative families, and classmate Kevin tried to teach him.

In the second act, the film jumps to Chiron as a teenager and solves more serious abuse and sexual problems. In these years, everyone has claimed to sleep everywhere, and young people like Chiron are trying to find their place, especially now that all aspects of normal family life are gone. He has nothing. To give him comfort he needs the kindness of his friend Kevin (at this age, played by Jharrel Jerome). Kairon had sex with Kevin (now played by Jharrel Jerome) one night on the beach. Then, Terrel (played by Patrick Decile) manipulates Kevin to knock down Chiron to defeat and defeat Terrel and his accomplices. After Chiron returned to school, he entered the classroom and smashed his chair at Terrel. Chiron was taken off his handcuffs.

In the third act, ten years passed, and finally, we met the young Chiron. His mother asked him to go to the alcohol recycling center to meet her, and Kevin (Andre Howard), a short-term chef and waiter who is now having dinner in Miami, called him. Kevin makes Chiron a "head chef" and asks Kairon about his life. Kevin revealed that he has a son who is in jail. As always, Chiron is very quiet. Later Chiron admitted that Kevin was the first person ever to touch him, and he has never touched anyone else since. The two held each other, and we saw young Chiron on the beach under the moonlight, Juan taught him to swim.

Kevin and Chiron on the beach

In addition to receiving several nominations, the film also received some positive responses. David Sims said in the "Atlantic" magazine that "Moonlight is a humane movie"[2]This is not a "distribution" film about "race or sexuality"; it is a human film, most of which are films that try to inspire sympathy and introspection.

"it’s a nervous glance between two young men who know something is a little different about their relationship but society has given them no words to express it.[3]" said Brian Tallerico. He think that Jenkins knows he’s laid the groundwork, trusts his actors and allows the emotions of what’s unsaid to provide the dramatic thrust that “Moonlight” makes its greatest impact.
