Monsters and Men Movie Poster

Monsters and Men is a American Drama movie who directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and released on September 28, 2018 (United States). This film recounts a story around three viewpoints to look at the shooting of an unarmed black man by a white cop in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant area. And this movie is a direct reflection of the real-life murders of Mike Brown, Laquan Macdonald, Botham Jean, Philando Castile, Eric Garner, Rekia Boyd, Stephon Clark and many others, black people who also died in white cops hand.

Plot

The story begins with a shooting of an unarmed black man by police officers. Manny Ortega (Anthony Ramos, Lady Gaga’s sidekick in A Star is Born), recorded the action using his phone. He is not sure to post his recording on the internet. Black police officer Dennis (played by the brilliant young actor John David Washington, star of Lee’s BlacKkKlansman) hasto conclude whether to put his profession in danger by uncovering his bad white partners. Young high school athlete Zyrick (Kelvin Harrison Jr) faces a similar problems: his father, a cop, is pushing him to pursue a career as a baseball player but he longs to join the campaign against the killing. [1]

Black Racism

Monster and Men shows how black racism exists in the modern era, long after the civil war, where they are killed for no reason. In this movie the victim is Darius Larson, a.k.a. Big D (Samel Edwards), a local who sells loose cigarettes outside a Bed-Stuy deli who passed away in 2014 after police set him in a chokehol purposely.[2] There is a man who recorded the event where a cop shot Larson befuddled whether to publish it or not because the police see him and say "it would be a disservice to everyone."

It portrays how the black people never get the equity regardless of whether they have the proof to it.[3] The movie also shows that being a police officer but black-skinned, will still face racism and discrimination. Dennis is a cop who has to endure the embarrassment of being pulled over by other white cops when he's off the clock. Despite the fact that he has an identification, the police need to check if the car was stolen or not.[4]
