The story tells about a young black girl named Lyla. She is spirited and observant, she is a child who's been given room to grow, making happiness both thoughtful and intimate. It's her dad talking about growing-up in South Carolina; her mom reading poetry; her best friend Juan, the community garden, and so much more. Written by poet Mariahadessa Ekere Tallie and illustrated by Ashleigh Corrin, this is a story of flourishing within family and community. [2]

Pros

This story is an ideal read-aloud for K-2 students that will encourage children to start talking. Reading it with the whole class help to grow children talk during Interactive Read Aloud, Layla’s Happiness is a great catalyst. Almost immediately, The children began using the “me too” sign language signal to show that they also loved the color purple, or wishing on dandelions, or climbing trees. [3]

One reader gave her thought about this book. She said that it's a simple story about a girl telling you what happiness means to her. The text is brief, but it uses colors and everyday relatable moments to describe the joy. It is a book that helps people to look more closely at the little bright spots daily life.
