Josie and the Pussycats is a Saturday-morning cartoon TV Series based on a comic book of the same name published by Archie Comics and created by Dan DeCarlo. The show was produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions aired on CBS from 1970 to 1971 with one season spanned over 16 episodes[1].

Plot

The show featured an all-girl pop band with Josie McCoy as the leader and guitarist, an African-American Valerie Brown as the tambourine player, and Melody Valentine as the band's drummer. The band toured the world with their entourage while getting mixed up in strange adventures. Other characters include the cowardly manager Alexander Cabot III, his conniving sister Alexandra, her cat Sebastian, and muscular roadie Alan M. Mayberry[2].

Empowerment

Valerie was the first major Black female character on Saturday morning cartoons, more importantly she was voiced by 2 Black women, Barbara Pariot as her speaking voice and Patrice Holloway as her singing voice[3]. The character traits for Valerie was also positive. Being the smart one in the group she was reasonable, logical, a mechanical queen, and the glue that held everyone. Her existence broke the boundaries at the time[4].
