Hennes & Mauritz AB (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈhɛ̂nːɛs ɔ ˈmǎʊrɪts]; H&M [ˈhôːɛm]) is a Swedish multinational clothing-retail company known for its fast-fashion clothing for men, women, teenagers and children. As of November 2019, H&M operates in 74 countries with over 5,000 stores under the various company brands, with 126,000 full-time equivalent positions.[1] It is the second-largest global clothing retailer, behind Spain-based Inditex (parent company of Zara).

Founded by Erling Persson in 1947 named Hennes (Swedish for "hers"), exclusively sold women's clothing. In 1968, Persson acquired the hunting apparel retailer Mauritz Widforss, which led to the inclusion of a menswear collection in the product range and the name change to Hennes & Mauritz.[2] Currently run by his son Stefan Persson and Helena Helmersson, the company makes its online shopping available in 33 countries.

Controversy

In January 2018, H&M faced backlash after releasing an ad that feature a Black child wearing a green hoodie with "Coolest Monkey In The Jungle" word printed on it.[3] People over the Internet describe the image as inappropriate and offensive, causing the hashtag #BlackTwitter and 'H&M is Cancelled' trending in Twitter.[4]

Since the scandal, the parents of the child featured in the image have publicly stated that they don’t believe the ad was racist, and the company has taken several actions, including hiring a diversity leader and issuing a public apology that was featured at the top of its website.
