Gun is an action-adventure digital video game published by Activision in 2005 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and Xbox 360. The game was sold for over 225.000 copies after a month release, and over 1.4 million units in the US as of October 2008 [1].

Gun is an action role-playing game. The main protagonist is Colton White. The player controls him through third-person eye. In the game, players can upgrade equipment and weapon using money from mining gold [2].

There occurs bandit attacks very often during traveling from town to town. The players can kill animals like buffalo, wild horses, and farm animals. Players need to control Town Patience meter. It goes down for every civilian killed. If the meter goes down to zero, a showdown ensues between the player and the locals [3]. The players can use revolver and switch it with rifles, bombs, bows, and shotguns. Some weapon allow the camera changes from third-person into first-person camera perspective. Mele combat can also be used. The weapon for melee combat is tomahawk, cavalry saber, or bowie knife. In some situation, stealth is a strategy to finish a mission. In addition, horseback combat is available during some missions. The player shoots with gun while riding. The horse and the enemy can be killed.

There are side mission and minigames in Gun. Side mission adds the player’s stats. The mini games includes poker tournaments, law enforcement, time trials, and bounty hunter [4].

Although the game won many awards, the game received many critics about racism.

Controversy

The game received boycott from Association for American Indian Development. Their offense was triggered because of the harmful and inaccurate images of American Indians. A website held petition demanding the publisher, Activision, to rewrite the game before re-releasing Gun to the retailers. The website demanded that video games consisting killing certain ethnic like African-Americans or Indians should not be tolerated [5].

Gamergod.com contributor, Beth Dilon, offended by stating that even though the game was fraught with racism, Antision’s action to release stereotyped video game was a serious problem [6]. On the other hand, Activision responded that the was made to represent the old American West during 1800s. The publisher apologized to any who might have been offended.
