In 2002, Rockstar North released a game, Grant Theft Auto: Vice City. The game is an action-adventure for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Microsoft Windows. The player controls the main character in third-person perspective either by walking or on vehicle. The game is an open world which allow player to roam around the map. The setting is in similar to Miami in 1986 [1] The story begin with the release of Tommy Vercetti from prison after being prisoned for drug deal ambush. While finding the truth, Tommy starts building power from other criminal organizations. The game was designed to the era in which criminal organizations gain control in the city. Moreover, drugs, gang activities, and crack pandemic spread and playable in the missions. The game contains violence either stealing, killing, shooting, and fighting. With a lot of violence in the game, the game was criticized for cashing violent for profit. The game also received criticism for the racism especially from Haitian community. The line “Killing the Haitians” was the trigger why the community was upset. In contrast, the game was sold for over 17.5 million copies making Grand Theft Auto: Vice City one of the best seller game. Although the game is surrounded with criticism, the game also received awards from Game of the Year awards considering the graphic, music, and the openness of the game world.

Controversy

While the game is fun to play, some group people accuse that it contains racism. They claim that some part of the game is cornering the instruction to kill Haitians by a drug dealer [2]. The Delray Beach-based Haitian American Community Council was going to do a strike in Boyton Beach. They also strike with similar line “Kill the Cuban” in the protest. However, Civil libertarians that speech alone could not be evidence in the court because it is under protection by the First Amendment. In the contradiction, many Haitians upon hearing the news took action by not playing the game. But, the claim was argued by some people. Their argument was the instruction to kill Haitians was never meant for them. The gang leader in the game instructed to kill the enemy gang members. Thus, the scene in which kill Haitian issue arose was never been the focus.

The controversy continued. An American station CBS accused that Vice City was selling racism and violent for money [3]. The report said, “Players are instructed to exterminate an entire ethnic group” when it refers to the line, “I hate those Haitians. We’ll take them out, we’ll take these Haitians down”. While the fact that Haitians in the case means the drug trafficking gang not the whole ethnic, the protest continued. Haitian Center Council and Haitian Americans for Human Right strongly labeled the incident as cultural attack on Haitian in the United States.
