Robert "Bob" Nesta Marley OM was a Jamaican singer, songwriter, guitarist, and activist. He was the frontman, lead singer, songwriter and guitarist for the ska, rocksteady and reggae bands: The Wailers (1964 – 1974) and Bob Marley & the Wailers (1974 - 1981). He is the most widely known performer of ska/reggae music, and is often credited for helping spread Jamaican music to the worldwide audience.[1]

Summary

This story is based on the lyrics of the Bob Marley song of the same name. Get Up, Stand Up tells the story of a young girl who sees injustices happening around her throughout the school day and shows how she is able to show love to others and help to make things right.[2]

This story tells about a young girl goes on with her day in school, she comes across several instances of teasing and intimidation. But with loving action and some help from her friends, she's able to make things right for herself and others. With exuberant pictures by John Jay Cabuay accompanying Marley's iconic lyrics, Get Up, Stand Up is a vibrant testament to the power we all have to make a difference.[3]

Pros

Brianna rated this book five stars, she explained this book is very inspirational. It showed that no matter what happened in life to get back up. This book was a book just to give the readers confidence in all things that they do in lives. This book helps people learned they could do anything that they put there mind to even if people told them that they couldn't do it. She explained more that she thought this book was a must read for everyone. It was very inspirational for any age of readers. When she read it, it gave her confidence even when she really was upset about anything. This book could just fill the bucket up real fast. The diversity in this book is also great if because it shows diversity.[1]

Carrying on her father’s legacy of banding people together in solidarity, Cedella Marley adds to her collection of picture book adaptations of the singer-songewriter’s beloved work with this new installment. Scenes, for example on a schoolyard, in which children are bullied or isolated are transformed, over page turns, into situations in which their peers earnestly step up to defend and include them (“Stand up for your rights”). An energetic read aloud that promises to pump up young dissenters and peacemakers, that was book reviewed was made by Publishers Weekly.[4]

She mentions it is a great read for young readers to encourag kindness, to make the right choices and to have the courage to state when something is wrong. The text is based around Bob Marley’s song Get Up Stand Up but the lyrics have been adapted by the author Cedella Marley who is the eldest daughter of the music icon. This is a fantastic, diverse read touching on timely themes for young readers. [5]
