Ice Cube attempt to portray the hood in a different light compared to the majority of the film that depicted the hood as overly violent and menacing[3]. The movie has gained a cult status, and offers a fascinating peek when street life meets pop culture. In a film review wrote by Caryn James of the nytimes.com, the movie is said to based on opened-eyed acceptance of drug use and guns as part of its characters' lives. It is also notable that the lesson from the movie is: fighting with fist makes you a man, and is better than guns, where you don't get killed in the process[4].
