The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. is an American worldwide maker and advertiser of skincare, cosmetics, fragrance, and hair care items, based in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. The company owns diverse brands which are distributed internationally.[1]

The company began in 1946 when Estée Lauder and her husband Joseph Lauder began producing cosmetics in New York City. They first carried only four products: Cleansing Oil, Skin Lotion, Super Rich All-purpose Creme, and Creme Pack. In 1948, they established their first department store account with Saks Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Over the next 15 years, they expanded the range and continued to sell their products in the United States. In 1960, the company started its first international account in the London department store Harrods.[1]

Work Diversity

In 2016, Ronald Lauder, a chairman of The Estée Lauder Companies, donated at least $1.6 million to support President of Donald Trump in pro-Trump organizations. This action was protested by over 100 employees who sent a letter to the chairman asking for his removal. It was mentioned that Lauder's involvement "puts a strain on race relations within the company." [2]

The Estée Lauder Companies intends to recruit more black employees and purchase more from black-owned companies after staff members put pressure on the brand to address race-related issues in the wake of protests occurring all over the U.S. The company outlined extensive plans to change how it operates to foster a more inclusive environment in a memo. The organization said that they support the Black Lives Matter movement and source products from black-owned businesses, and expand its shades and formulas for ethnic minorities. Different changes include a plan to double diverse recruiting, guarantee equal access to leadership training, and require more diverse slates of candidates for executive director-level positions and above. [3][4]

The executives of The Estée Lauder Companies mentioned to Bloomberg News that they, “stand in solidarity with our black employees, black consumers and black communities and firmly believe black lives matter.”

ELC said it will also donate $5 million in the coming weeks and an additional $5 million over the following two years. This pledge includes and builds upon the company’s $1 million pledge to support racial and social justice organizations previously communicated to its employees.[5]
