Estée Lauder Companies Logo

The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. is an American multinational manufacturer and marketer of prestige skincare, makeup, fragrance and hair care products, based in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. The company owns a diverse portfolio of brands, distributed internationally through both digital commerce and retail channels.[1]

The company began in 1946 when Estée Lauder and her husband Joseph Lauder began producing cosmetics in New York City. They first carried only four products: Cleansing Oil, Skin Lotion, Super Rich All purpose Creme, and Creme Pack. Two years later, in 1948 they established their first department store account with Saks Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Over the next 15 years, they expanded the range and continued to sell their products in the United States. In 1960, the company started its first international account in the London department store Harrods.[1]

Estée Lauder We Stand With Black Community

Following the brutal killing of George Floyd, Estée Lauder Companies Inc. announced its Commitment to Act on Racial Equity in the US, which includes a pledge to give, including through The Estée Lauder Companies Charitable Foundation and the company’s matching of employee gifts, a total of $10 million over the next three years to support racial and social justice and to continue to support greater access to education through groups such as NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., Equal Justice Initiative and The Young Women’s Leadership Schools (TWYLS). ELC said it will also donate $5 million in the coming weeks and an additional $5 million over the following two years. This pledge includes and builds upon the company’s $1 million pledge to support racial and social justice organizations previously communicated to its employees.[2]

Worker Diversity

The Estée Lauder Companies plans to hire more black employees and buy more from black-owned companies after staffers put pressure on the brand to address race-related issues in the wake of protests happening throughout the U.S. In a memo, the company outlined extensive plans to change how it operates in a bid to foster a more inclusive environment. The company said it stands behind the Black Lives Matter movement and will source more products from black-owned businesses and expand its shades and formulas for people of color. Other changes include plans to double diverse recruiting, ensure equal access to leadership training and require more diverse slates of candidates for executive director-level positions and above.[3][4]
