CrossFit is a branded fitness regimen philosophy and a competitive fitness sport, incorporating elements from high-intensity interval training, Olympic weightlifting, plyometrics, powerlifting, gymnastics, girevoy sport, calisthenics, strongman, and other exercises created by Greg Glassman. It is a registered trademark of CrossFit, Inc., which was founded by Glassman and Lauren Jenai in 2000.[1][2] It is practiced by members of thousands of affiliated gyms, roughly half of which are located in the United States, and by individuals who complete daily workouts (otherwise known as "WODs" or "workouts of the day").[3]

The original CrossFit gym was in Santa Cruz, California, and the first affiliated gym was CrossFit North in Seattle, Washington; there were 13 by 2005, and as of 2019, there are over 15,000 CrossFit affiliates in over 150 countries..[4]

Controversy

In June 2020, when Black Lives Matters movement emerged after the killing of George Floyd, CrossFit founder and CEO Greg Glassman responded to a tweet about racism's being a public health issue by calling it "FLOYD-19." Though he later referred to Floyd's death as brutal, he proceeded to use the attention and his responses to the outrage to further complain about the quarantines necessitated by the government's late, minimal response to COVID-19 and their effects on society.[5]

Not long after that, on a Zoom call with affiliates, a recording of which was leaked to the media, Glassman can be heard belligerently refusing to condemn racism or police brutality. He snapped at a small group of his colleagues: “We’re not mourning for George Floyd. Other than it’s the ‘white’ thing to do, I get that pressure, but give me another reason.” Separately, in a leaked email with another affiliate gym owner, Glassman made it clear that, in the slaying of Floyd, he sides with the police.[6]

The leaked statement caused prominent CrossFit athletes, the faces of the brand, have disavowed Glassman. Reebok, CrossFit’s official outfitter, and Rogue Fitness, one of its equipment suppliers, also have broken ties. Glassman then tweeted an apology on his personal Twitter account and announced that he would step down from his role.[7]
