Controversy

Cop Shot the Kid depicts the police brutality against the black community in America as the accompanying visual follows the same narrative with white police officers aggressively pursuing a black man. [3]

This song shows how police violence became a hot issue in 2018, showing everything from harassment to shooting of a young man with hands in the air. Police brutality is not a new subject for the rapper who has been taking aim at the police’s injustice and violence since “Halftime” off his debut Illmatic back in 1994. [4]

The video, which is directed by Rohan Blair-Mangat, shows the brutality of police in the scenes. The first one when a young black teen is seen getting handcuffed and harassed by a pair of police officers. While in another scene, a different young man is shot by police as he flees with his hands raised. [5]
