Anthropologie is an American clothing retailer founded in 1992 and now operating more than 200 stores worldwide which offer an assortment of clothing, jewelry, home furniture, decoration, beauty, and gifts.[1] Anthropologie is part of URBN brands, which includes Urban Outfitters, Free People, BHLDN, and Terrain.

Controversy

In June 2020, Anthropologie has been accused of racism after several former employees claimed that stores in California, Chicago, Seattle, NYC and Canada use the code name “Nick” to refer to Black shoppers. The backlash to the brand came after a June 1 post on the fashion company’s Instagram account. The post—which featured a stylized Maya Angelou poem—called for equality and empathy, but failed to mention Black Lives Matter or the current protests.[2] Some of the employees also claimed that they’d been “trained” to watch Black shoppers and follow them around the store.

Anthropologie posting an apology not long after that, said the brand has never and will never "have a code word based on a customer's race or ethnicity" after shoppers and former employees accused the company of racial profiling. The retailer posted a series of messages on Instagram addressing its policies and procedures surrounding race. It said it stands in solidarity with the Black community in the wake of protests against police brutality.[3]
