Aaron Loves Angela is a modern adaption of Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare, was released on December 25, 1975 and directed by Gordon Parks Jr. The film stars Moses Gunn, Kevin Hooks, Irene Cara is about a young black boy who falls in love with a Puerto Rican girl and their different race’s relationship matters. [1]

Plot

Sets in the Harlem ghetto of New York City, Aaron (Kevin Hooks) is a black ballplayer in Harlem, New York. His father expects Aaron to be a basketball professional player as he never had. A Puertorican girl from Spanish Harlem, Angela lives with her mother. [2] The romance between Aaron and Angela has to be hidden away from their families and friends as they always meet secretly.

Aaron and Angela worry that their racial difference will cause problems. Their parents against their interracial relationship and soon they find out that the same prejudice is share by their surroundings, friends and neighbors. [3]

Controversy

By many of those critics' hypothetical standards on how black people should be portrayed and described, blaxploitation films might be considered as films that problematic to show. Blaxploitation itself is a subgenre of exploitation film around the early and mid of 1970s. Featuring majority of black casts, however the characters often depicted violence and sexualized stereotypes. In the early of 1970 in Harlem where De facto segregation between blacks and Puerto Ricans where racial resentment cannot be stopped. [4]
