Craig of the Creek is an American animated TV series created by Steven Universe alums Matt Burnett and Ben Levin for Cartoon Network. The show premiered on March 2018, and renewed for third season on June 2020[1].

Plot

The show follows An African-American boy named Craig Williams and his two friends Kelsey Pokoly and John Paul "J.P." Mercer on a series of misadventure around their neighborhood's creek. Set in a town of Herkleton, Maryland in the fictional suburban Baltimore/DC area.

Black Empowerment

The series have taken special attention to inclusion and positive representation of minorities. The critics called the show as racially groundbreaking and progressive series that gets diversity and inclusion right. And accurately portraying and normalizing Black culture with its diverse group of relatable characters and universal narratives. Despite the fact that both of the show creators are not persons of color. The representation is also reflected in the show's Black voice actors, storyboard artists, and writers[2]. It is uncommon to have shows with Black lead character that don't fell into harmful stereotypes, often times they're relegated to the role of a sidekick. In an interview with the Fastcompany.com, the creators said that they wanted the show to " Connect to something that every kid experiences, but also to feel specific in a lot of ways"[3].
