Use

Use this template for Greek words for which the Ancient Greek description is not satisfactory or limiting. Such words can be:

  • Words of Koine Greek such as Greek: κράββατος (krabbatos, "bed").
  • Words of Late Antiquity and Atticist words of Byzantine literature, such as Greek: ἀθεμιτογαμία (athemitogamiā, "unlawful marriage").
  • Names, such as Greek: Αγησίλαος (Agēsilaos, "Agesilaus") and Greek: Σωκράτης (Sōkratēs, "Socrates").
  • Hellenized Latin and Hebrew names, such as Greek: Ἰουστινιανός (Justinian), Greek: Αὐρήλιος (Aurelius) and Greek: Ίωσήφ (Joseph).
  • Words that have remained unchanged throughout the history of the Greek language such as Greek: θάλασσα (thalassa, "sea") and Greek: ἄνθρωπος (anthrōpos, "man"). Their meaning may be the same.
  • Newly coined scientific (or not) words from Ancient Greek roots, such as haemophilia and astronaut.

Consider using one of these more specific templates:
