Use

Use this template for Greek words for which the Ancient Greek description is not satisfactory or limiting. Such words can be:

  • Words of Koine Greek such as Greek: κράββατος (krábbatos, "bed").
  • Words of Late Antiquity and Atticist words of Byzantine literature, such as Greek: ἀθεμιτογαμία (athemitogamíā, "unlawful marriage").
  • Names, such as Greek: Αγησίλαος (Agēsílaos, "Agesilaus") and Greek: Σωκράτης (Sōkrátēs, "Socrates").
  • Hellenized Latin and Hebrew names, such as Greek: Ἰουστινιανός (Justinian), Greek: Αὐρήλιος (Aurelius) and Greek: Ἰωσήφ (Joseph).
  • Words that have remained unchanged throughout the history of the Greek language such as Greek: θάλασσα (thálassa, "sea") and Greek: ἄνθρωπος (ánthrōpos, "man"). Their meaning may be the same.
  • Newly coined scientific (or not) words from Ancient Greek roots, such as haemophilia and astronaut.

Consider using one of these more specific templates:

Syntax

{{lang-grc-gre
| Text in Ancient Greek in Greek alphabet
| Text in Ancient Greek transliterated in Latin alphabet (optional)
| Translation in English (optional)}},

e. g. :

See also

  • {{lang-el}} for Modern Greek.
  • {{lang-grc}} for Ancient Greek instead of Greek explicitly stated.
  • {{lang|el}} tags Modern Greek text, without the label (for use with custom display, and other uses).
  • {{lang|grc}} tags Ancient Greek text, without the label (for use with custom display, and other uses).
  • {{transl|grc}} tags text as "Ancient Greek Transliteration" (has no visible effect other than tool tip when pointer is placed on text).
