Quip logo

Quip is real-time collaborative documents, spreadsheets, and chat embedded inside Salesforce to transform any business process.[1] t is founded by Bret Taylor and Kevin Gibbs in 2012. Bret was co-creator of Google Maps, CTO of Facebook, and is responsible for Facebook’s “like” button. Kevin led engineering and product at Google, and brought Google App Engine to market. Quip raises $15M in series A from Benchmark Capital, and launches in mid-2013. Quip introduces Spreadsheets for teams, expanding productivity and collaboration beyond the document.[2]

The core of Quip provides word processing and spreadsheet functionality, accessible via the Web, an iOS app, and an Android app. Alongside all documents on Quip is a live updating history of edits made, as well as the ability to highlight portions of a document and add comments, which facilitates collaboration.[3]

Anti-racist workplace

Embracing differences is Quip guiding light towards building a healthy, happy team. Diversity in gender, ethnicity, background, and everything else is par for the course at Quip.[2]

Quip believes that they have a moral responsibility to help lead the fight for a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive tech industry. They believe that diverse and inclusive teams are essential to build the best product, to meet business goals, and to create a work environment where people from all backgrounds can feel like they belong, which will ultimately make the entire team more successful. Quip has been actively teaching and educating team members on how to build a more anti-racist workplace through various methods:

  • Hosting a book club on the book How To Be An Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi
  • Creating a central repository to encourage folks to support organizations fighting racism and police brutality
  • Developing a dos and don'ts messaging guide centered around racial equality
  • Doing a virtual volunteering event by reading Anti-Racism Children's Book for the kids at UCSF[4]
