ALT1: ... that the first actions of the Surf Bathing Association of New South Wales was a protest against male bathers.
A bathing association "protesting against male bathers" is funny/odd. John Vandenberg (chat) 11:31, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
Disagree with this alternate hook because "against male bathers" sounds like the protestors wanted men off the beach, whereas in fact, the protestors were men who wanted to stay ON the beach. The protests were ones not AGAINST males but rather BY (and on behalf of), male bathers. Whiteghost.ink (talk) 13:15, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
ALT 2: Another alternate hook might be" "... that Australian attitudes to masculinity and beach culture were partly affected by mass public protests against proposed rules for men's swimsuits?"Whiteghost.ink (talk) 13:15, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
I'd suggest cutting the word "partly". They're either affected or not? --99of9 (talk) 00:47, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
ALT 3: ... about the 1907 Sydney bathing costume protests when an attempt to force male beachgoers to wear more clothing was stymied by a mass of men wearing their sisters' or grandmothers' underwear?
ALT 4: ... that the 1907 Sydney bathing costume protests were a response by men wearing women's clothing to proposed regulations on beach dress?
